Extending a visit to the helicopter museum near Weston, we decided to make a weekend of it and enjoy the Mendips as well. Shipham looked a good village base and so did the photo of the Penscot Inn. A work in progress - but more progress needed to warrant the tariff

A small, poorly decorated double room, sadly lacking in character & a tiny unpleasant ensuite with broken skirting that exposed the pipes, a towel rail that was coming off the wall & a shower that looked it's age & sounded like a jumbo jet. It worked but it was best not to look to closely at the browning shower door seals or the blackened shower head. Very disappointing. Read more

Lovely, warm, quiet, comfortable, friendly, clean, excellent food and in a great location!

We had a two night stay, and found the area beautiful and in a great location - close to cheddar, Wookey Hole, Wells, the mendips and Glastonbury. The locals were particularly helpful offering advice and directions and even drawing us maps!It was really good to come back to a warm, comfortable hotel and be greeted by friendly staff and excellent service. The hotel facilities are very tired and poorly decorated

To be fair, for various reasons we ended up not staying for the night. We didn't sample the restaurant or bar. The room needs a complete makeover which wouldn't be difficult to do. It's very basic and was cold when we arrived. The 'welcome' was very indifferent. Read more

No Cheesy comments about this B&B near Cheddar

On the last night of our honeymoon, me and my wife stayed here as a break on the way back from Cornwall. The room was an en suite with fantastic tea and coffee facilities (I've never seen such a varied range in any B&B before) and they room was also very clean

A restful break, with great staff, good food [plenty of it!] and a charming guest house

For me it was a visit to a place that I last stayed in over 40 years ago, so bought back many memories. The Inn had been bought by the new owners Guy and Sarah and they had still kept it's charm, but had ploughed a lot into it to make it well worth a visit. A pleasant stop at a character inn in a charming quiet village

The staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming. The dinner and breakfast both very good, in pleasant dining room adjoining the bar, which has a good selection of beers. The main room was a little small but quite ok, comfortable and tastefully decorated; the bathroom was generally fine, but capable of being a little better on some lesser points. Parking was good at the back of the inn. I wish we had had time to stay longer. Read more

A base from which to visit local places of interest

An Olde Worlde Inn (former Quaker School) with the charm of an old timber and stone constructed building in a small village. Excellent meals, clean linen and friendly staff. Plenty of off road parking. Read more

Central area for visiting many attractions in and around the Cheddar Gorge area, and the coastline of the Bristol Channel. The owner and staff of the Inn were most welcoming and the food was good.
Dislikes?
This is not a modern building and possesses the charm and eccentricities of a building of its era.
