Description

River Lodge is a quality accommodation which is a great touring base for Wicklow County. The famous Wicklow Gaol (Jail ) museum is only a short stroll away and Brittas Bay which is a Blue Flag Beach is only a short drive away. The harbour town of Wicklow (a Viking name- Vyking-lo meaning sweet meadow) has a long and interesting history. Local historians tell us that there were people living here 2,500 years ago . A short wander through the town and the harbour area will tell you why.Wicklow is now a typical Irish country and seaside town, attracted friend and foe. Take a walk to the lighthouse pier and to the ruins of the old Norman Keep that we call the Black Castle where you will see the fantastic vantage point the holders of this headland had over the bay to the north and the seas to the south. Visit the Historic Gaol where actors play the part of jailer and matron to get a feel for life from the 18th century on to more recent times. There are lots of lovely cafes and restaurants in the town and at night you can enjoy great Irish traditional or ballad music sessions. There are many activities in the area from golfing and hiking, to horse riding , kayaking, angling, and garden tours. We are walkers ourselves (especially Ian) and we are delighted to share any information we might have with you. You could make a tour of Wicklow. It is famous for its beauty and is often called the Hollywood of Europe. Many movies have been made here-P.S I Love You, Braveheart, Leap Year Excalibur, Asterix, The Tudors, The Vikings and many more. If gardens are your thing, Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland and there are an abundance of show gardens. The closest to us are those landscaped around a river at Mount Usher in Ashford and the meadow gardens of Kilmacurragh. We are locals and know the area and if there is any information that might make your stay more enjoyable we would be delighted to help.
