Lovely Northern Dales Walking Pub

We stayed for 2 nights with our dog. The location is great for walking and the hotel has 8 or 9 excellent walks ( 4 to 8 miles in length) that you can access direct from the pub. We did a couple of the walks and ended with a meal in the bar one night (with dog) and a meal in the lovely dining room (without dog!). Read more

Myself, wife, son, daughter in law and grabs on stayed in twos rooms for one night on way back from Scotland. Overall very good and pleasant stay. Staff were more then willing to add extra bed to one room when grandson had to stay unexpectedly. Dinner was very good and everyone happy including burger eating Gson. Good beer and nice atmosphere. Boots & Beer walking event "Hub"

I was part of a group of 5 friends who joined The Boots & Beer event (22 participants). My room was No 17 - adjacent to the drive and accessed from outside the main building. The room was of adequate size for me (I would describe as a small double room) with an ensuite shower. It was well equipped, slippers and cottonwool/buds a nice "extra" touch. Themed interior design with local sheep breeds and rural check gave it a very nice vibe. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. Read more

Disappointing food and accommodation

Third (and last) visit to the Black Swan. Bedroom was "poky" - much smaller than last time even though it was classed as a deluxe superior. Read more

Response

We are very sorry that Mr & Mrs Braithwaite did not enjoy their return visit to us. The room booked on-line is a large room with super king bed and seating area, so unsure as to why they thought it small? Regarding dinner, we always reserve tables for our residents but if the guest does not book a time/table we always ensure we can seat them, but we cannot hold tables 'just in case' as guests sometimes have other arrangements. We do not have any 'poky' back rooms, they're all lovely.

Disappointing

I have heard good things about the Black Swan over many years and I was really looking forward to seeing for myself. I was considering the venue for a family event and wanted to test it out. I stayed for one night and had dinner in the fire lounge and breakfast.

Worth a return visit but on a leisure trip, not business

My usual accommodation in the Kirkby Stephen area was temporarily unavailable so I found the Black Swan via an internet search. Very enjoyable overnight stay, if a little pricey for a small single room with no desk or reliable wi-fi. Read more

Response

Thank you for your feedback, Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the mobile phone companies, but if this guest had informed us that they needed mobile signal, we do provide complimentary Orange/EE 'guest' mobile phones for use when needed. In addition, we do have wi-fi and it does work in all of the public rooms. Again if our guest had talked to us, we could have helped with this and moving him to a larger room with work area. We are a quality country pub, and many business guests like that.

Excellent evening meal in the restaurant, with quick service and good pricing. Very comfy room and bed, warm, & clean. Excellent breakfast with a wide range of choices and no limit on quantity.
Dislikes?
No desk in bedroom, hotel wi-fi didn't work. No mobile broadband signal for Orange/T-mobile or 3. Would be better if the room had a decent sized single bed and then there would be space for a desk.

Fantastic is the only word that comes close explaining how we felt about the Black Swan Hotel

Sadly my wife and I were only staying overnight on our way to Scotland. If it had been possible I don't think we would have moved on for a few days.

The hotel staff have be the most professional group of people that have ever working in the hotel industry. We are limited with space and I understand their comment regarding residents lounge, but unfortunately we do not have one, or claim to have one. Our residents are always able to have a seat in the bar for pre-dinner drinks, and this was the case with these guests, and they did have to move into the restaurant, but that was where they were booked and chose to eat! Our guests can choose to eat in the bar or restaurant and have that table all evening.

generally good and would recommend as a place to stay, just a couple of niggles.

High standard of accommodation, very quiet room, high quality food and friendly staff. At busy times they were under pressure and may have been short of staff at the time we were there, leading to slight delays during meals. Only serious gripe being that no food could be made available for me before 8:00 AM in the morning. So I missed a breakfast one day and no refund was mentioned, I was too polite to ask. This would have to improve if business customers are expected in the future Read more

Trying to sleep in a noisy smoke filled room

On arriving we were shown to the annex room because we have a dog. After a long ardous journey from Cornwall all we wanted to do was sleep but he locals had other ideas. They carried on chatting and smoking right outside our door until just before mid night when we had to go out and complain. They ungraciously departed but the room reeked of cigarett smoke for the rest of the stay. The breakfast was spoiled by being served on cold plates and the food was not very hot either. Read more

Response

We are so sorry to read this review from Mrs Jones and very disappointed that they did not enjoy their stay. We do point out on our website, and whenever anyone makes a reservation for our dog friendly rooms, that they are directly outside the bar and that there is noise. We know they are not great rooms, but try to make that clear on booking. I am surprised about the negative comment regarding our food as we have a fantastic reputation for our food and always serve breakfast on hot plates.
