Delightful 5 days in St. Agnes

A week in Cornwall part business and part leisure. Have stayed at Driftwood Spas before 3 years ago and loved it back then so planned to return. The Cove and beach area is lovely and clean, excellent location to go walking from also. Only 15 minutes from Perranporth which has a superb beach. Good surfing location and handy to visit many areas of Cornwall from Plymouth to Lands End. Some excellent places to eat out in St. Agnes. Place called "Taste" is superb but needs booking in advance. We have stayed previously and loved it, we can bring our dog and the bar serves great ales, the food is fabulous and the breakfast well you are spoilt for choice. OK for one night or two

The staff were very friendly and helpful except for 2 girls in the bar during the day (1 especially was more interested in her friends). They need some training in customer awareness and in customer service. The bistro lacked any atmosphere + is a bit stark. The waiter was lovely though. Unfortunately the breakfast bacon, hogs pudding + sausage were very rubbery as though it had been cooked for a long time. Read more

Disappointing hotel

On arrival, we went into the pub which, although having won many awards seemed very dark and dingey. The carpet felt as though it was soaked in beer and the smell seemed to back this up. The rooms were up some steep, dark stairs behind the pub. The room we had was small, but adequate. We only ate breakfast there as we were going to visit friends. Breakfast was also adequate but the scrambled egg had brown bits in it as though it had been burnt. Not very appetising. Read more

A really comfortable stay in an outstanding location.

We stayed for only two nights and would have liked to have stayed for longer. Our room on the second floor was, as they say, small but perfectly formed - sufficient space for two, a comfortable bed, a well-designed bathroom with spacious shower and to cap it all an excellent view of the ducks' morning antics. Breakfast overlooking the sea in glorious September weather can hardly be bettered. Evening meal in the characterful bar was really good value. Read more

Great Place, Reasonable Prices, friendly staff but below average evening meals

Generally everything about the place is excellent (this is our second stay) but evening eating is a bit hit and miss. It was the same last year, giving little priority for tables to residents. Absolutely stunning location, place to stay and staff are great.

Had a wonderful time, we have never stayed before as we usually hire a cottage, but as treated ourselves to a long weekend away visiting a family member and made it the honeymoon we never really got to have on our own as we married down here but had all the family with us and we had our little boy with us. Fantastic dog friendly hotel

This was our first hotel break with a young puppy but it all went really well. The hotel welcomes dogs at a small extra charge. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the bar food was good. We have stayed here before as it is in a fantastic location and nothing seems too much trouble for the team there. To be fair there are better rooms than the one we had, but it was all that was available, so we would try a different room next time. Read more

The staff were fantastic with the puppy and we were made to feel very welcome. She was allowed everywhere except the restaurant, but we could eat in the next door bar area which was great.

Great place for beach ,walking, relaxing break.

Went there as part of a birthday celebration. A number of pretty good restaurants within a ten min walk, (we had no car, as we went down to Cornwall on the night sleeper.) of the hotel. Need to book ahead at busy times of the year. Enjoyed lovely weather, beach, cliff top walks, the beer from Driftwood micro brewery, and had excellent reports of Lewsey Lou's chip shop next to the hotel and owned by Driftwood Spars, sadly no time to confirm that but it appears very popular! Perfect for a walking holiday base, with a dog.

I stayed here while walking the South West Coast Path, with my dog and it was a great base, with good food, comfortable single room in a lovely location. It was the first time I had holidayed without my husband for many years, and it was nice not too feel that I stuck out like a sore thumb in the restaurant/pub. Some great live music in the pub garden when I arrived, if a little loud outside my bedroom window, but as I like live music this was ok for me. Read more

Can't wait to go back!

We were returning to Cornwall for a short break having not been there for a number of years. We wanted to be in an area where we could explore easily on either coast and St Agnes seemed the perfect spot. The hotel is set right on the beach which is just outside the main village and is right on the coastal path so attracts lots of walkers who call in for food/drink so the main bar is a busy thoroughfare throughout the afternoon and evening. Loved It!

We've visited Trevaunance Cove many times over the years and we'd said for some time we really should stay at the Driftwood Spars rather than just having a drink or a bite to eat before heading off elsewhere, so this year we booked to stay two nights. We liked the beach, the wedding, the attitude of the staff there. All of the staff were lovely and very friendly, from the cleaning staff to the receptionists to the bar staff to the event organisers.

The room was slightly shabby for the price. For example, the bathroom light flickered, you had to put the kettle on the floor for it to work, it was in a nice setting but too near the road for kids.

Perfect small, friendly hotel in a Beautiful, Peaceful Coastal location

From the minute I arrived I felt welcome and relaxed. I was nervous about staying in a hotel on my own for the first time but this was so cosy and everyone so friendly and helpful I was immediately put at ease. I was also worried that, because it was also a pub that it would be noisy late at night, this was not the case. The hotel was immaculately clean and fresh, the decor is tasteful and the room was light and airy. I did not feel akward walking into the breakfast room in the morning either. Read more

Pleasant stop=over

I had originally planned to stay 2 nights in the St Agnes area before moving down to The Lizard, as part of a touring week in Cornwall. I stayed here last year and enjoyed the experience very much. Unfortunately there was only room for 1 night this year at this period. The only "blot" on the landscape was a large party of enthusiastic Australian tourists which stretched the staff's potential rather, and didn't help my Migraine over breakfast the following morning. Yet another wonderful experience at Driftwood Spars! We first stayed there almost 25 years ago.

This time we had a small but comfortable bedroom, facing away from the early morning sun, which would otherwise wake us up too early. The location, so close to the sheltered beach, is wonderful. There is a lot to do, such as walking up to the Beacon, surfing, swimmimg, and visiting other places such as taking a train from St.Erth to St.Ives, after a 20 min. drive to St.Erth. For those who can fly aeroplanes, the local airfield is very close, and the people there are very kind, too. Read more

lovely location and accommodation shame about the menu.

We had a great weekend in a superb location and very comfortable accommodation. The staff were frindly and helpful and the atmosphere very good. Great real ales too. But the food was below average, basic pub fare and was costly - not what we were led to believe from the pictures. Also a failing was the kitchen staff did not cater for simple variations or additions eg you could have chips (the soggy thin, possibly reconstituted ones), but cheesy chips not possible! Read more

Great location, which you're paying for!

We stayed here as it's well known & features in our chosen travel guide - the Good Pub Guide! From that you might gather that the atmosphere in the pub was possibly more important to us than the accommodation. This is where the pub really scores: Good beer, food & atmosphere. The room was very basic, had paper thin walls & a squeaky bed. The en-suite was fine - nothing more. Breakfast was fine. The cooked breakfast used good quality produce. The buffet 'extras' were sadly less impressive. Read more

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback on your recent stay. We are extremely sorry that you were unhappy with the bed and soundproofing in your room. We have investigated the problem with the bed and will be replacing it very shortly with a new one. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Amazing location, great pub, but shame the rooms aren't as nice as they look online

We were down in St Agnes for a short break/friend's wedding and chose Driftwood Spars because its website made the place look lovely, like a boutique B&B (and the rooms were priced accordingly). Had a great time but an uneven experience: location, breakfasts and pub were all excellent, but the rooms failed to match them. Wonderful local pub atmosphere and beers, friendly and helpful staff, but food could be better.

The location and atmosphere of Driftwood Spars really grew on us. We liked to be part of a very friendly and eclectic patronage. It proved to be a really good vantage point for walks and short car tours around West Cornwall which we fully exploited. Our visit just preceded the Bank Holiday weekend which meant that parking access and traffic were relatively low, and made for a very relaxed 3 days. Availability of local seafood in W Cornwall and at the pub should be much better than it is. Read more

A very welcome break in a beautiful location. The room was clean with lots of space for our family of four. If I was to find any criticism of the facilities it would be that the bathroom was a little tired and dated and although it was clean it did smell a little of stale urine- probably the result of a dated lino floor? Friendly and helpful staff, clean and airy room with plenty of towels. Electric shower was weak and pitiful and not what I expected for a room at this price. Quality of the breakfast was faultless though the portion seemed a little mean. Read more

Weekend Country Break

The hotel is marketed as 4star - the location, food, staff service all deserve that rating but the quality of the rooms does not. We had a fantastic sea view in room six and althougth the bathroom was clean and the sheets were clean and fresh the general cleanliness of the room was very very poor - the cobwebs on the ceiling were unbelievable, the lampshade was a mass of dust and cobwebs, the stains on the wall were very unsightly.
The room was in dire need of some TLC and a spring clean! Read more

Great Place to Stay

The room we had was not in the main part of the hotel but was very close. The room was spacious (more so than in the main hotel) clean and comfortable and excellent value. the breakfast is out standing and the views from the restaurant second to none. If you love North Cornwall, good food and drink and like a place where you can get to know the locals-both people and dogs-then you won't go far wrong here. The bar food is excellent value for money and the staff friendly and helpful. Read more

The food and drink along with the close proximity to the footpath and the beach for walking and taking in the views.
Dislikes?
The TV in the room was a bit woeful but to be honest you are hardly likely to go to this area and spend much time watching it. Might be a bit of an issue of you have kids though.

Storage

The staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Storage was a problem. There were about 6 coathangers in a wardrobe along with an iron and ironing board (cramped) and apart from a desk with tiny drawers there was nowhere to either hang clothes or put them in drawers. Breakfast and the meals at the hotel were wonderful but there were no inexpensive choices and parking in St. Agnes was pretty much impossible. Bed wasn't overly comfortable and the pillows a little lumpy. Read more

We will definately be back.

The Driftwood spars was just what we wanted for a romantic short break. The room was spacious with plenty of room in the ensuite. The decor was tasteful in a nautical theme. We loved the breakfast. It makes such a nice change to have fresh locally sourced food rather than the budget sausages and bacon we usually get. Read more

there was nothing to dislike but next time we will ask for the second floor room with sea views, as our views of the cove were limited by the flat roof of the restaurant.

Excellent base to explore from, and excellent food.

The rooms are not big, but clean and pleasant. The rest of the hotel has bags of character, the staff and locals are really friendly, and the location couldn't be better for the beach and surrounding area. Overall i would definately stay there again and have recommended it to all my friends and relatives. Read more

Cornwall revisited

Driftwood Spars proved an excellent base from which to explore a lovely area that we last visited on honeymoon 35 years ago.
The staff were efficient, helpful and friendly. The accomodation was satisfactory in every respect.
The breakfasts and one evening meal that we had were very good.
The location was great. We enjoyed exploring local walks and places of interest, visiting places further afield and sampling several excellent eateries, including one of Rick Stein's in Padstow. Read more

Description

Whatever the time of year, the 4 star rated guest accommodation at the Driftwood Spars offers a warm and friendly welcome. It provides a comfortable environment in which to relax and enjoy your holiday. This traditional, family owned Cornish B & B also has an onsite dining room, microbrewery & seafood takeaway facilities too. Driftwood Spars is ideally situated in St. Agnes, a place of complementary contrasts, from wooded valleys and deep dark tin mines, to light and airy seascapes. There are carnivals, fetes and fairs, music and theatre, regattas and fishing contests going on throughout the year. There are also numerous interesting galleries, potteries and design workshops. Pubs and eating-places abound and the village is famous for its old pubs and nightlife. The establishment is a 17th century building full of history. The name ‘Driftwood Spars’ hints at its local history - the ceiling beams in the bars contain spars from some of the ships that have been wrecked in Trevaunance Cove, the local beach. All of our well equipped rooms are ensuite and some boast wonderful views. Plenty of parking is available and there is free wifi for guests in the main building. Please note, rooms 10-15 are located in the annex across the (quiet) road these do not have the best wifi, but are very suitable for dog owners due to the gardens. In November 2008 the Driftwood Spars was awarded for it's pub dining experience, it gained a 'Taste of the West' Silver award for 2008 and again in 2009. In April 2009 & 2010 we were named CAMRA Kernow pub of the year. In April 2011 we were named Free House of the Year by the Publican Magazine. PLEASE NOTE OUR CANCELLATION POLICY: 48 hours notice between October - March, or 7 days notice April- September. Failure to give appropriate notice will result in the first full night's stay being charged for. Please call or email us to cancel.
