Quiet Scottish Retreat

we found it a little uncomfortable in the bar area in the evening as most other guests were staying for business reasons - without exception they spent the evening on their phones or tablets and did not even look up to say good evening! After a series of nights in corporate hotels we were initially nonplussed by the relaxed service and informality of Forss House, but we adjusted rapidly and soon felt totally comfortable and at home. Food and menu promising but aspects of it were odd (beetroot seemed uncooked) and portions were on small side. A very memorable nights stay, wish it could have been longer!

Sadly we only stayed one night at the Forss House Hotel which is a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings, a walk down to the falls is a must!
We could not fault anything, the room was spacious comfortable & clean, the food was excellent & being a Whisky drinker the bar was superb with it's vast range of Malts.
Anne was a fantastic host & I learnt a few things about Whisky from her, she is without doubt a great asset to the hotel. Read more

One of the better places to stay around the Thurso area

We chose Forss House Hotel as an overnight stop on a driving holiday around Scotland. The hotel is in a fairly remote location, but it was easy to find. It's a quiet place to relax and our room was very large with a huge comfy bed and an enormous bathroom with lovely toiletries to use. There was also free WiFi, and a Sky TV box in the room along with the usual tea, coffee and biscuits. We didn't have an evening meal there, so can't comment on that but the breakfast was very good! We stayed overnight to be close to the ferry to Orkney from Scrabster. We arrived in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday, took a lovely walk to the falls and along the river. We stayed here for just one night on our way home from Orkney. We were struck by the very warm welcome and the service was friendly throughout. On this occasion I was only able to book Forss House for one night because they were fully booked on my other required dates.
The weather was foul and the warmth of my reception

We are very disappointed that you did not stay in and enjoy dinner on the evening you stayed with us. You did not give us a chance to point out the vegetarian option on the menu, which if you did not like, the chef would have gladly come up with even another alternative. As regards the shower, we can only guess that it was on a wrong setting as they are normally really powerful and we get lots of good comments on them. We want our guests to be happy and can only apologise for any shortcomings.

Hotel is really charming, nicely away from road but extremely easy to find

As a vegetarian there was no option for dinner, or any real interest in providing an option. No alternative was offered, which for a hotel of this standard is surprising in this day and age.

Excellent, relaxing retreat

A whistle stop night but wish it was longer. Greeted with a smile on arrival and was able to relax in the huge bath in our room. An evening meal to die for followed by a huge welcoming bed with sky tv at my fingertips. Freshly cooked breakfast with juices, cereal, fruit or croissants. A large pot of coffee and a stroll along the river. Every whiskey made in the bar and a perfect night sleep in an amazing hotel. Thank you Read more

The hotel is around 3 miles outside of Thurso in Caithness Scotland. The hotel is well presented as you walk into the cosy lounge and into the central hall and traditional stair case for this period house. We are sorry you were not happy and did not think you got value for money. Our 5 year refurbishment programme finishes this year when we have painted the exterior of the house. Our first priority was to improve the inside with the bedrooms and bathrooms upgraded. We felt blankets gave more of a country house feel but we do have king-size duvets if a guest prefers one. The initial room offered was cold and had insufficient hot water to have a bath - the definite no-nos for a hotel. When this was pointed out I was offered an upgraded room at no extra charge.
