Description

Sir Edward Lutyens' masterpiece, built on the site of the market garden and pub from which it took its name, is set within the glorious medieval town of Sandwich, nestled on the banks of the River Stour. Built in 1912 as a country retreat for three wealthy brothers, the house was immediately recognised as exceptional. Architectural historian ASG Butler cast it as the "supreme rendering of the full Georgian Idiom.....it deserves every possible record." In 1950, the Salutation became the first 20th Century building to be granted a Grade I listing. It is now a charming hotel and restaurant spread across the main house and its three surrounding cottages. Our grounds are open all year round, ready to share our take on the perfect English garden. Eat with us, drink with us, sleep with us. Stroll around our green paths and lose yourself in our herbaceous borders. Explore the area or never leave the grounds. Take Afternoon Tea on the terrace. Toast by the Drawing Room fire. Dine at the Chef’s Table. Wallow in Bed. Make yourself at home.

The historical nature of The Salutation and its properties, along with our Grade 1 status, means that all of our beautiful properties have the odd quirk here and there, be it original sloping floorboards or narrow staircases. All of our bedrooms are located on the first or second floors of our properties, and are without lift access. Please bear this in mind when booking your visit.
