Lovely February break

We chose this hotel for its convenience to Penrith and its reputation for good food - we wanted to spend a comfortable evening 'dining in' with the family to celebrate a birthday. It fitted the bill perfectly. Read more

An excellent hotel with exceptional food.

My wife and I stayed at the Temple Sowerby Hotel and found the welcome extremely friendly as indeed were all the staff encountered.
The hotel is smart and has a lovely rear garden in which to relax.
The rooms were adequate but a TV the size of my Ipad let the room down.
The food was excellent and the wine list good enough to have a decent bottle. The location of the hotel is excellent. You get what you pay for,so whilst not cheap, our stay was thoroughly enjoyable and we hope to return. Read more

Comfortable, relaxed country house style accommodation

Overnight stop on the way back from Scotland. Excellent, well provisioned accommodation with high quality fittings and all the extras you could expect. The food was outstanding and definitely at the fine dining end of the scale. I don't know whether it was because it was quiet at the time of my stay with only a few other mainly elder residents but there was an eerily quiet atmosphere at dinner. I would describe this as proper old fashioned country house hospitality with cutting edge cuisine. Read more

The hotel was charming and so were the staff. Foodstuffwas of high quality. The surroundings were idyllic Read more

Response

I'm pleased this guest rated us a maximum 5 - we couldn't have been so bad!
I do feel the criticism unfair. Asking if she would like a drink does not constitute pressure! It was her own suggestion to have a glass of wine with a colleague on her return.
Secondly, it was not a case of 'not being allowed' to eat at 7pm. Only 7.30 was available when she decided to dine, but she didn't then come down until 8pm which then clashed with a large party. Nor was she 'abandoned', but well attended.

Likes?
The setting and the lovely garden, bone china crockery, high quality service by staff, a sense of old world charm and reassurance
Dislikes?
Pressure to consume alcohol - was there to work
Not allowed to eat at 7.00pm after hard day
Pressure as a single person to have long 3 course meal
Abandoned outside restaurant alone as no table

Thanks for the nice comments - the flycatchers are still thriving, as are the 11 ducklings hatched by a Mallard who took up residence last month and are eating us out of house and home! Regarding the 'dead trees' in the pots, I was still hoping that they may have survived the hard winter, there were still signs of life - alas, they have not revived and are now deceased! I'm now looking for new specimen shrubs for the pots that would suit the location - any ideas?

Likes?
The attention to detail and being able to watch the Pied Flycatchers!

We were a bit surprised by the seemingly dead small trees in pots outside the front door and round the side, which could perhaps seem a bit unwelcoming - especially given the overall excellence.

How strange! We hardly saw this couple! They were joining a family group and went out to a family party locally for the evening. The only other time we saw them was at breakfast so we hardly had time to be 'aloof'! Perhaps the fact that he booked online without telling us he was joining the family indicates the type of mentality? We had to call to clarify the situation - he was rather offhand. I must say that the rest of the family were very pleasant! Never mind, there's always one isn't there?
