The Crumplehorn Inn & Mill Information
Description
The Crumplehorn Inn & Mill is the name given to the present complex of buildings made up from the old 'Killigarth Mill' and the old 'Crumplehorn Farm' buildings. The Hamlet of Crumplehorn is shown on today's Ordnance Survey maps as it was back in 1888 and the local area dates back to the Domesday book, commissioned in December 1085 by William the Conqueror, who invaded England in 1066. The original book is currently housed in The Public Records Office in Kew, London. The Mill is grade II listed circa late 18th century. The corn mill produced its last bag of flour back in the 1950s when it closed. The Inn used to be a counting house during Elizabethan times when privateering was a legal occupation. Ship's captains could plunder Spanish & French ships legally and split the proceeds with the Crown. The Crowns proceeds went to fund the Navy in further attacks against the French. The Queens Treasury officer, Lord Burleigh often came to Polperro to inventorise the ship's cargo and take away the Crown's share. The Crumplehorn Mill was also home to Zephaniah Job, who was the single most influential person in the history of Polperro, he was known as the 'Smuggler's Banker’. When smugglers appeared in court in London or Cornwall, Zephaniah would hire lawyers on their behalf as well as sending them money to jail if they were incarcerated. Job took charge of the pilchard export trade between Polperro and Italy, until it was ended by Napoleon. He was a corn trader, seed and timber merchant, coal importer, leased a number of lime kilns in the area and brought linen from Ireland to sell in Looe. When after 1800 the government took tougher action against smuggling, Job turned his energies to other causes including the repair of the harbour destroyed by the storm of January 1817. Zephaniah Job died at Crumplehorn at the age of 75 and was buried in Lansallos Churchyard.
