A word from Helen Browning "Cuckoo Pen is a 20 acre field that adjoins the county boundary with Oxfordshire. Our dairy herd spend some of the summer months there, grazing lush clover pastures. In one corner, a vernacular building ‘Cowpen’ provides a peaceful home for owls….do not disturb! And on the far side, we have re-instated one of the many ponds that once peppered this part of the farm. It’s a beautiful spot."

Barn Field is where we are planting our first field of fruits and nuts – damsons, cherries, plums, apples, pears, apricots, almonds, walnuts with an understory of soft fruits such as raspberry, blackberry, black and redcurrants, gooseberries….but it will be another year or two before there’s any ready to pick. Meanwhile, a flock of laying hens range freely providing the gorgeous eggs you may have for breakfast. A great spot for a picnic.

But it has a football pitch, so the perfect place to take kids to let off steam, play rounders or whatever. When not in use for fun and games, we often keep the orphan lambs here in the spring and summer. Do ask if you would like to help with feeding them."

Some words from Helen Browning, "Marral Woodland is my folly really. We have very little woodland on the farm, and so we planted this 18 acre heavy clay field, which was always troublesome, with thousands of trees some 16 years ago. It’s a great place to walk your dog, picnic or make dens and you’ll notice the different combinations of native trees as you walk the circular path, with lots of fruit and hazel intermingled….do help yourself."

Some words from Helen Browning, "Kate’s Folly is the small group of orchard trees in middle of a field we now often call ‘Kate’s’. When I started running the farm in 1986, my great friend from college, Kate Hobsley, joined me on the farm for a few years, and we used the field for our first forays into organic growing. We had raised beds of vegetables, blocks of different clovers, intercropping trials, the first two Saddlebacks and some laying hens. We planted a little orchard which is all that remains of those early days."

This was excavated in the 70s, and I remember being amazed by the mosaics, and the underfloor heating systems that they would have needed in this open landscape, where it’s always a few degrees colder than in the village.”

Some words from Helen Browning, "Eastbrook Valley is such a special place, probably my favourite place on the farm… It is one of many stunning dry valleys that run from the Ridgeway down to the Vale through and was carved, we believe, by meltwaters after the last ice age. here you will find carpets of cowslips in April and May, drifts of orchids in June and July, Oxeye daisies, Ladies bedstraw, quaking oat grass and literally hundreds of species, which have all re-emerged since we stopped using fertiliser 30 years ago. With skylarks and buzzards overhead, there’s no better place to ramble a while."

Permanent grass protects the very high organic matter soils which we call the ‘black puff’. These are almost like peat and feel springy to walk on. There is a major badger sett, intermittently inhabited, and a photographic hide for anyone who fancies a night miles from anywhere, watching wildlife."

Some words from Helen Browning, "Smith’s Bottom belongs to our neighbour’s, Rob and Jo Selbourne but it’s very much worth a visit. Two stunning dry valleys converge into the ‘bottom’, the steepest of which is brilliant for tobogganing if you are ever here in the snow. The path there will lead you above the stream which starts at the spring head and feeds the old water cress beds. These have been out of commercial use for decades, but Bishopstone cress was once quite famous, I believe."

Helen Browning's Royal Oak Information
Description
We are a dining pub with rooms, in the middle of our own organic farm in the village of Bishopstone, on the edge of the Wiltshire Downs. Great service, informally, and a welcome as if it’s your own front room. Our 12 luxurious rooms are a world away from the crowd, most with their own doors off a sunny, shared courtyard. Each uniquely stylish room is named and themed after a field on our farm here at Eastbrook, a perfect place to unwind in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Our rooms are set apart from the pub by about 70m, and delightfully peaceful. Sleep deeply in crisp cotton bedding. A hearty breakfast to set you up for your day, whatever it holds, and high speed wifi to keep you connected. Many of our rooms can be booked to accommodate families, check the descriptions for more details. We can also provide travel cots free of charge for the majority of rooms. We have four dog-friendly rooms (charge applies). You’ll eat and sleep well here. Generous organic food from our farm or our neighbours. A menu that changes most days and always with the seasons. All accompanied by excellent local ales, wines, gins and juices. Our family, friends, and farm workers have shared meals and beers here for 15 years and we only serve the food and drink that we enjoy ourselves. Circular walks to The Ridgeway National Trail that runs across our (tenanted) 1,400 acre organic farm start from our front door. Our farm boundaries to the south give access to thousands more acres of open land, criss-crossed with paths and bridleways, and the glories of pre-historic Wiltshire and Oxfordshire lie all around us. A beautiful garden, full of wild flowers, to enjoy in the summer and a proper fire to come back to when the days drew in. Always magazines and books to borrow. Dogs and muddy boots welcome. This is your place to enjoy. Just a medium stone’s throw from Swindon station, with easy access to London and The Cotswolds.
