House On Main Street Information

Description

Known as the "Victorian Antiques and Guest House" in a bygone era, This 18th century Colonial/Victorian home features one of seven original gambrel roofs in the 'Village Beautiful' and can truly boast that President Woodrow Wilson slept here! It's true! The house was owned by his daughter and son-in-law and he liked to come up from D.C. for Thanksgiving. In fact in 1916, he was losing his re-election bid to Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes, the Republican candidate. He came up for his Thanksgiving visit early to get out of Washington and upon arrival was informed he'd taken California and won the election! He gave an impromptu victory speech from our side porch, overlooking Ft .Hoosac Place. Wilson was the only sitting Democratic president to win re-election between 1832 and 1936. His favorite room was the Rust Room, so named for the beautiful rusty/orange glow it receives from the autumn leaves in mid October.
