Millbrook Country House Information
Description
Set in 1/25 acres of parklike grounds with mature trees and a long driveway to the rear for parking, Millbrook Country House is a classic colonial (c.1810) two-story clapboard house. The 4 guest rooms, each with private bath, are upstairs. Downstairs are large side-by-side parlors, with fireplaces and a Bose music system; our office/library; and formal dining room. (Owners' quarters and kitchen are beyond the dining room in an adjoined late-18th-century building.) Each guest room is decorated differently from the others, with fine Italian furniture and fabrics, artisan-made lamps, area rugs, and closets. Bed and bath linens are also Italian. Outside are flower gardens and broad lawns punctuated by tall evergreens, maple trees, and pines. A c.1875 Norway spruce shades the patio, where breakfast and afternoon tea are served in fine weather. The entire house is centrally heated and air-conditioned. The ambiance of MCH is one combining comfort and relaxation, with attention paid to guest services.
Owners Lorraine Alexander and Giancarlo Grisi purchased the house that would become Millbrook Country House in 2002. Lorraine was an editor and writer in NYC for 27 years before marrying Giancarlo, who was born and grew up in Emilia-Romagna, in north-central Italy. Giancarlo is an excellent cook, preparing freshly prepared and nutritious breakfasts for guests each morning. He is also MCH's business manager. Lorraine helps guests find places and events—from concerts at Bard to local gardens and shops—conforming to their interests and arranges, when desired, for lunch and dinner reservations. She continues to write, about the arts and the environment. Between them, Lorraine and Giancarlo speak 4 languages: English, Italian, French, and Spanish. They enjoy life in the Hudson Valley and the opportunity that MCH ensures for meeting fascinating people from many parts of the world.
