Nettles Farm Information

Description

Come, escape in luxurious, organic, bucolic privacy. Nettles Farm is a place to enjoy good food, and to COOK! All of our offerings are organic and of the highest quality. Our Covid Cleaning protocols are the toughest anywhere, including a Green Tech air sanitizer that allows for ozone bombing between stays, killing viruses and bacteria. The Farmhouse Suite offers queen beds, private deck, beautiful garden views, a private bath with soaking tub, and a gourmet kitchen including a WoodStone pizza oven. There is an outside cooking/eating area complete with a Big Green Egg. The Farmhouse offers queen beds, private decks, a walk-in double steam shower, with a gourmet kitchen in the great room, perfect for parties. There is a gas grill, charcoal grill and a Bertello Pizza Oven. Each suite can sleep up to 6, and has its own kitchen garden. Minimum stay 2 nights, unless approved. There is a wood-fired sauna available for scheduled use. Nettles is situated on more than 5 acres of west-facing woodland, with more than 3 acres in cultivation. While once covered with row crops for the Willows Inn, now there are perennials such as grapes, berries, and fruit trees. The greenhouse is planted with tomatoes and other vegetables, for you to enjoy. We are just a few minutes' walk from the Willows Inn and our own public beach, called Sunset Beach for the startlingly colorful sunsets we often see. One little recognized fact is that most afternoons, all year, no matter the weather of the day, clouds part to the west and we are showered with glorious sunshine to end the day. This is the time to sit in the garden, facing the sun, and lift a glass of wine to celebrate the day. Nettles Farm is a place to cook and enjoy good food, amid good air, and good water. Our eggs will make your breakfasts memorable. Arrange a visit to the reefnet fishing gears, and check for workshops.

I have been a commercial fisherman all of my adult life, graduating from WWU in 1972, and buying my first boat 6 months later. I've owned many boats, from San Francisco Bay to Bristol Bay, but my favorite fishery came to me when I landed on Lummi Island in 1992. Reefnetting was the main island culture in those days, and I wanted to join in. At the same time, Judy and I built a commercial kitchen attached to the house I had built, and proceeded to build a farm-to-pasta kitchen business. We added a USDA abattoir, and greenhouses, and chicken coops, and created a healthy business that served all of the Puget Sound area. Not content to see our products in stores and restaurants, we decided in 2001 to buy the shuttered Willows Inn to make a farm-to-table restaurant, an idea still then in its infancy. With the combination of the reefnet salmon, halibut and spot prawns just off the Willows deck, and the produce from Nettles, we had an entire world that spoke specifically of Lummi Island. Continuing that vision with Nettles Farm, we have an authentic San Juan Island agritourismo, but you don't need to travel to italy to enjoy it.

Accessibility

The first floor of the Farm House is fairly wheelchair accessible. This includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen.

Directions

  • Road from Seattle (100.0 miles)

Travel north on I-5 to exit 260. Turn west onto Slater Rd, and go 3 miles to the light. Turn left on Haxton, past the casino, and 2 miles to Gooseberry Pt and the ferry.  The Whatcom County ferry runs nearly every half hour. On weekdays it has a schedule; on weekends it leaves at :10 past the hour, but will come right back if there are too many cars to fit. Go right off the ferry, 3.5 miles, past the Willows Inn, and turn left at Melcher. Bear left twice, and take the right fork of the cul-de-sac, onto Matia View Dr, a gravel road. Nettles is signed a short distance up the hill, on the left.
