Owens Farm Information
Description
Enjoy a country vacation on our scenic 112-acre farm in the heart of Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River Valley. Owens Farm boasts 112 acres of rolling pasture, with lovely views in all directions. A traditional red Pennsylvania Bank barn, pond, and classic white farmhouse complete the picture. With hundreds of sheep, friendly pigs, chickens, turkeys, working border collies, horses and honeybees, there is always something interesting going on around here! Authentic farm activities are yours to observe or participate in. Some guests like to help with the farm work, others are content to have a peaceful base to relax and unwind, surrounded by nature. Your visit is private and personal, because we only host one group at a time. Your guesthouse is a restored carriage barn from the 1800's. It is a cozy combination of original framework with modern conveniences like heat and air conditioning. You have an entire kitchen complete with fridge, stove, oven, microwave, pots and pans, dishes, etc. You even have a washer and dryer! The bedroom is upstairs. Downstairs is the kitchen, bath, and leisure seating. We will let you know what farm activities are planned during your stay. Each season has its own character. Spring is lambing time, with hundreds born. Summer is for haymaking and using the border collies to move sheep from pasture to pasture. Fall is a big time for sheep work. Bee tasks take place any time. The vegetable garden, orchard, and flowers produce all spring and summer. Sorry, no guest pets are allowed, and there is no smoking anywhere on the property.
Owens Farm is truly a family farm, owned by David and Caroline Owens, whose 3 children grew up on the property and have 'grown and flown'. This story started in 1990 on 13 acres in New Hampshire. The family raised livestock for their own needs, tending their animals in a natural setting and avoiding chemicals and growth stimulants. It was only a matter of time before neighbors approached, asking if they could raise and sell some extra animals. People were learning about the pitfalls of industrial agriculture, and seeking pasture-raised meat for their families. A business was born. By 2007, the family was ready for a larger farm. A 2-year search led to the state of Pennsylvania and the town of Sunbury. Caroline is a former Vocational Agriculture teacher who worked in marketing communications and the equestrian travel business before starting her family. She holds a B.S. in Animal Science/Agricultural Education from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Boston University. David is an engineer now running his own database and software consulting business. He earned his B.S. in Engineering from U. of Lowell and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University.
