The Swan Information

Description

Set in the beautiful historic small town of Bampton situated on the Devon and Somerset border. This is an area well known for its hunting, fishing, shooting and is very popular with ramblers and cyclists. The Exmoor National Park is only six miles away and the beautiful beaches of north and south Devon is a 40 minute drive. The Swan being the oldest pub in Bampton was originally lodgings to accommodate the masons and other craftsmen who were hired to enlarge the church in 1450, which is just behind the pub and can be seen from our back terrace. The pub has recently been renovated to a high standard with a solid oak bar giving it a contemporary yet traditional feel, which has the original fireplace and bread oven dating back to 1450. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Serving traditional pub food, fine wines and real ales all at affordable prices. On Sundays you can order a roast of local meat from the farms, or something from the menu. We have well kept real ale on the hand pumps with two guest ales and a keen selection of wines from around the world to suit all tastes. We have a passion for the use of local produce and creates some real pub classics such as sausages and mash, cod and chips, pies, grilled rump steak and simple baguettes with a great choice of sweets to tempt. We have two comfortable double rooms and a twin room for bed and breakfast. All are en-suite with flat screen televisions, Wi-fi, dab radios, USB sockets, and tea and coffee facilities.

Husband and wife-team Paul and Donna Berry, our chef-patrons, have been dishing up heavenly meals and hospitality in the heart of Devon for the past 11 years. Both are talented, award-winning, industry-acclaimed chefs, who have gained a reputation for creating some of the region’s tastiest dishes while also serving up a warm welcome. They have run two of Bampton’s gastropubs and say the secret of their success is based on offering the very best in seasonal, regional ingredients alongside top-notch customer service. Donna had always been passionate about good food and often dreamt about one day owning and running her own pub, so she pestered Paul to do it. Before working together in Bampton, Paul ran his own pub in Buckinghamshire and Donna worked in various kitchens in South Devon. Donna says: “I am really lucky to be able to do the thing I love as a job and on my days off you’ll still find me in the kitchen. I can’t get enough of it really. My big love is seafood. I enjoy it all. I get very, very excited when we get something different from our fish suppliers. I am a bit like a child in a candy shop when the delivery van doors open.
