The Bell Inn Information
Description
The Bell inn is an AA 4 Star Inn and the bedrooms all feature en-suite bathrooms and are finished to a very high standard. All the bedrooms are at the rear of the building and overlook the church and churchyard of the historic St Michael's Church. The restaurant has been awarded AA 2 Rosette for Culinary Excellence and offers a great range of food or just call in for a refreshing real ale or choose from our extensive wine and drinks menu. The Bell Inn sits in the heart of the village of Thorpe Le Soken which is set in the picturesque Essex countryside close to the Victorian seaside towns of Clacton on Sea, Frinton on Sea and Walton on the Naze. The building has been used as an Inn since the middle of the 16th Century and it has a fascinating history going back to the 1500s when the property is believed to have been the Guild Hall of St Michael's Church in Thorpe Le Soken until about 1545. The property features traditional beams throughout and has a picturesque terrace which was originally the front of the building, overlooking St Michael's Church. The premises have recently been lovingly renovated throughout and the bedrooms are now available for bed and breakfast, offering en-suite deluxe double rooms overlooking the church.
The Bell Inn won Channel 4's '4 In a Bed' programme on television and has been awarded AA 2 Rosettes for Culinary Excellence and is an AA 4 Star Inn The Bell Inn is full of character and steeped in local history. Our bedrooms are named after three historical characters with direct connections to the local area. The hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of Kitty Canham who was buried in the churchyard. In July 1999, The Bell suffered a devastating fire, which destroyed the entire roof, first floor and much of the cottages attached. It took almost 18 months for the building to dry out and a year to renovate it to its present state. As The Bell is a listed building the work was carried out under the watchful eye of the English Heritage Trust. Many discoveries were made in the process including the huge fireplace in the upstairs bar which had been bricked over until the fire. The building as a whole has been returned to its former glory.
