The Mowbray Information

Description

The building was built by the Duke of Devonshire as a private dwelling. During the WW2 the RAF used it to for Canadian Airmen & following the war it became a private hotel / guest house. Where the name Mowbray comes from is unclear. Some say it is because one of the architects involved in the building of the terraced row was a Mr A W M Mowbray. Others point to the DeMowbray family who landed a little further along the coast during the Norman conquest. Whatever the origins the Mowbray has been welcoming guests for over 90 years. Famous tennis stars have stayed in the past such as Steffi Graff & Gabriella Sabatini because it is so close to the Devonshire Park Tennis Courts. With the theatres also so close the Mowbray has hosted many stars of stage & screen. Roy with sons Asher & Saul Burman acquired the Mowbray in March 2020. Father & sons have for the last 25 years all been & continue to operate hospitality & other small businesses in Eastbourne & nearby currently including a pub two restaurants & holiday cottage accommodation. Unfortunately on the day it became ours the government closed hotels due to the Covid problem, but the time has been well used as we have been able to undertake improvements & renovations whilst our guests were unable to attend the Mowbray. These include new carpets on the stairs & some rooms new bathrooms & new beds in many rooms new TVs & improved high speed internet in every room & automatic digital locks on every door to enable remote & out-of-hours check-ins. The lounge has been fully refurbished as has the kitchen and the Breakfast room and new decorative and energy saving lighting throughout. With 13 rooms and a small team, the Mowbray can offer a friendly and helpful service that you just won’t find in a big hotel which is why the team has won Les Routiers’ Guest House of the Year twice (2014 and 2016) and been nominated at the AA’s B&B awards for “Friendliest Landlords”. We love having you here and we are sure you will too.

We are proud of the awards that we have won as one of the leading B&Bs in Eastbourne. The Mowbray is a multi-award winning B&B and we would love for you to visit us so that we can show you why our awards tally keeps growing! We enjoy creating and offering hospitality and we love the great double bonus -- the fact that in this work we share in your enjoyment of the great break you enjoy having with us.

Accessibility

Because of the nature of our original Edwardian building we are not able to offer disabled access or modified rooms. However for those with moderate mobility once you have reached our front door by the 8 easy steps from the street we do have a lift to all the bedrooms. Furthermore although the breakfast room is on the lower ground floor if a guest cannot manage the stairs at all we have a table and chairs set up in the guest lounge so we can serve breakfast there.

Directions

  • Road from A27 or A22 (3.0 miles)
