The Walker House Information
Carved into the same hillside rock from which mineral ore was first discovered and mined in the 1820s, the Walker House stands proud as one of the oldest, unique, and most beautiful buildings in the United States—it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A large structure, the Walker House includes 42 rooms covering almost 16,000 square feet, and it sits on the south side of historic Mineral Point, Wisconsin, in the Midwest’s unparalleled driftless region (millions of years ago the glaciers spared this region when they drifted down the Midwest and flattened the terrain). Whether you stay in one of our small rooms or 2-room suites, you immediately feel at home. There’s the natural warmth of real Black Walnut Wood – in the floors, night tables, towel racks, and picture frames (all handcrafted in our workshop). The soft light comes from the wall lamps or through the sheer curtains on the windows. And you can control your environment, too, with a room thermostat for heat, window A/C for cooling, blackout shade for privacy, and lack of a TV for undisturbed rest. But what greets your eyes first will be the quilt bed covering – all earth tones – and the wall art by local artists rendering local scenes. Are the beds comfortable? You bet! A guest told us recently, “I frequently suffer from bouts of insomnia, but not here. I slept last night for 7 straight hours.” Now that’s a room -and bed- that hugs you.
