Up on the second floor of this old cottage is the light and airy Loughrigg bedroom. As in the other rooms, a quality bed and bedding, antique furniture and a welcoming bathroom beckon. Relax and enjoy the tranquillity of your room, a haven in a busy world. Take a few minutes to gaze over the rooftops of Ambleside to the wooded slopes of Loughrigg, the hill that gives this room its name. There is an excellent half day walk that takes you up onto Loughrigg Fell then back to Ambleside via a path that skirts both Grasmere and Rydal lakes. Undoubtedly one of the best short walks in the Lake District. You will find a variety of magazines to read in your room, or borrow a book from a small but varied selection downstairs by the reception desk. A welcome tray is provided, including coffee, tea and hot chocolate (Fair Trade), and biscuits. There is usually a sample of Paul’s home-baking as well. In addition, a crystal decanter with a good splash of Port inside is cordially presented for your enjoyment. Like the bedroom, the en-suite bathroom is decorated in soothing neutral shades of carefully chosen Farrow and Ball paint. There is a bath with a shower enclosure at one end, and gallons of piping hot water for a good soak. Fluffy towels and face cloths are provided, as well as complimentary luxury toiletries from local company, The Bath House.

This is a charming room, with a fine bed and quaint original fireplace. It is on the first floor with views across the stream (Ghyll is the local word for a mountain stream) to the waterwheel. Pause awhile to sit upon the window seat and look out over the river and waterwheel, a view unique to our guesthouse. A large gilt-framed antique mirror and original Victorian prints of the Windermere area add to the atmospheric appeal. The calming nature of the period blue Farrow and Ball paintwork, coupled with William Morris Brer Rabbit fabric, finishes off this room perfectly. A generous-sized bathroom beckons, with its roll-top bath and Victorian style high level toilet. Lashings of steaming hot water always available, for a relaxing bathe or revitalising shower. Fluffy bath robes, towels and face cloths are provided, as well as complimentary luxury toiletries from local company, The Bath House.

Climb the original winding staircase to arrive at the cosy Rattleghyll room, on the second floor. Its name echoes the original title for the cobbled alleyway that runs between the guesthouse and the stream (ghyll). The name arises from the din that was made by the woollen mills that surrounded the stream. Within the room sits an elegant oak chest dating back to the Mid 18th Century, with the signature of its maker pencilled onto the side of one of the drawers. There are also lovely framed prints of the area. Views from this room include glimpses of the imposing Fairfield horseshoe, as well as a panoramic view over Ambleside towards Loughrigg fell. After venturing onto the fells, soak your aching muscles in the steaming waters of the bronzed Imperium clawfoot bath. This attention grabbing tub sits on a rather lovely stone-tiled floor. There is a Victorian style shower attachment with shower curtain and riser rail. Fluffy bath robes, towels and face cloths are provided, as well as complimentary luxury toiletries from local Company, The Bath House.
